Operation Thanks
At Wisconsin Women 4 Our Troops, we send holiday care packages to deployed service members. Among the most cherished items are the handwritten letters and drawings from students. These personal messages remind our heroes that they are appreciated and supported, no matter how far from home they may be.
This is an easy, meaningful classroom activity—students can complete a letter or drawing in just 15–20 minutes. It’s a wonderful way to practice gratitude, empathy, and creative expression while brightening a service member’s day.
Gratitude in Action: Lake Country School
Last spring, the fifth graders at Lake Country School took part in a simple but powerful act of kindness: writing letters to deployed service members. Their heartfelt notes were included in care packages sent overseas by Wisconsin Women 4 Our Troops.
A few months later, proof of their impact arrived. Mrs. Ellis, one of their teachers, received an email from a U.S. Marine serving in the Middle East who had received the students’ letters. His words of thanks showed just how meaningful their efforts were:
“I have recently received quite a lot of letters from your students… I would like to take a moment to personally thank you and all of your students for the letters of support. I’m sure they would love to know that their letters actually get sent out to the troops, and are very, very appreciated!”
This exchange is a beautiful example of gratitude coming full circle: students practicing kindness, a Marine feeling supported, and a community reminded of the power of connection. As Lake Country School shared, they are grateful for their partnership with Wisconsin Women 4 Our Troops and the opportunity for kids to not only strengthen their writing skills, but also brighten the day of those who serve far from home.
